The kitchen as a hub

T he kitchen is the largest hub for goods and, unfortunately, also for waste. On average, every Swiss person spends around 636 Swiss francs per month (around 21 Swiss francs) per day on food. Most of this food arrives at our homes packaged. Of the 706 kg of so-called municipal waste we generate each year, half ends up in the rubbish. Most of this consists of packaging waste from our kitchens. In addition to packaged food, we buy kitchen utensils that are often made of plastic. Whether it's lemon squeezers, pasta strainers, straws, plastic cups... The recycling rate for plastic products is only around 11%. The rest is incinerated. But not everything: incineration leaves behind slag and filter dust – so-called hazardous waste. Depending on the country, this usually ends up underground. Our empty home
T here's hardly any regular garbage in the living room and bedroom. But at the latest, during the next move, we'll notice that the pressed particleboard wardrobe can no longer be assembled properly, or that the corner cupboard no longer fits in the corner due to the new sloping ceiling. We don't want the stains or scratches on the sofa in the new apartment. Sell it secondhand? Who wants stains on their sofa? Give it away? To whom? (The average plastic weight of a sofa: 5 kg. That's equivalent to 250 plastic bags or 500-1,000 fruit bags).

We find a surprising amount of painted plastics (composites that can rarely be recycled) in children's rooms: the bed and table are often the only items made of natural materials. Whether the reason for this lies with relatives, the parents' lack of time, the toy manufacturers, or politics remains to be seen. Here are some interesting websites with useful children's toys.

In the home office, the trash can is mainly filled with paper. This is 100% recyclable if it ends up in the paper recycling bin. "Fortunately," the PC equipment is only replaced every three years (260 million computers are disposed of worldwide every year. It's better to sell it or give it away).

W iederverwertbare Abschminkpads gehören zu den positivsten Entwicklungen gegen die steigende Flut von Abfällen. Abschmink- oder Reinigungspads eignen nicht nur zum Entfernen des Make-Ups, sondern für jegliche Verunreinigungen im Gesicht, Hals und Dekolletee bis hin zu Fingernägeln. Wir haben uns die unterschiedlichen Meinungen vieler Kunden angeschaut und festgestellt, das es keine eindeutigen Aussagen zu den verschiedenen Materialien und ihre Effektivität gibt. Während einige Abfallfeinde 100% Baumwollpads favorisieren, finden andere die Reinigungspads mit Bambusfaser oder Hanf am optimalsten. Wir haben alle 3 Varianten in unser Badezimmersortiment aufgenommen, damit du das Reinigungspad, das bei deiner Haut die besten Resultate ergibt, auswählen kannst.

Add to that cotton swabs, disposable cotton pads, and disposable razors, and the bathroom waste bin quickly fills up.

T he waste we generate on the way to work or on a weekend stroll only vaguely lingers in our consciousness. Be it our daily coffee-to-go cup or the ready-made salad with plastic cutlery: drunk and eaten on the go, disposed of in a public trash can on the way. The waste we generate on the go is the garbage from the cafe, the discount store, and other people. It doesn't feel like our garbage. Our garbage is the garbage that ends up in our garbage. And because it's mine, I'm also willing to pay for it...

There are now good alternatives for eating and drinking outside to reduce the flood of waste. Robust stainless steel thermos flasks, thermos cups, and sturdy lunch boxes not only protect the environment but also encourage a rethink in the packaging industry.

When we do our big grocery shopping at the supermarket, we (unfortunately) still can't avoid packaging waste. There are countless controversial statements on this topic from producers, wholesalers, logistics experts, food authorities, and consumers. Everyone has their own reasoning for why packaging has to take this form or another. But one thing is clear: Before the era of the plastics industry and large supermarket chains, global waste generation was many times lower than it is today. Even if the clock can't be turned back, awareness must move forward. Our treasures are intended to help with that.
